Dental Care
|
At Empire Veterinary Clinic we feel that good dental health is essential to the comfort and
well being of your companion. Poor dental health not only causes oral pain,
but it also introduces bacteria into the blood stream.
This can cause disastrous results in the liver, kidney and the heart.Proper dental hygiene throughout your companion's life can help to avoid these situations and add 3-5 years to their life. Proper dental health is a combined effort between the veterinary clinic and the pet owner. Procedures that may be performed at home may include brushing the teeth, rinsing the mouth, applying dental gel in the mouth, encouraging the consumption of dry food over canned food and the encouragement of chew toys. Procedures that are performed in the clinic include the monitoring of dental disease progression by examination. The cleaning and polishing of the teeth when needed and the removal of the teeth when necessary. In the companion animal, proper cleaning and polishing of the teeth require a general anesthetic. At that time the teeth are ultrasonically scaled to remove the tartar. The gum line is probed to reveal periodontal pockets. The gums are evaluated for disease and recession. If cavities or root abscesses are found, then the teeth are removed to get rid of the infection and to remove the oral pain. After the dental procedure, take home instructions are explained to the client. Rechecks are done on a 3-6 month basis depending on the severity of disease. |
